Where I’m Supposed To Be

As a kid (and even now) my absolute favorite thing to do when playing a CD was to open up the album book and look inside. Sometimes it was lyrics (often scribbled in the artist's actual handwriting), or a little photoshoot, collage, or storyline. I poured over these books, seeing them as a further invitation into the album and expansion of the sonic world the music provided.

When Carolyn released her album, I made this for her (but mostly for me). Her world is bursting with the soothing elements of nature, the woods that accept us as we crawl towards it in heartbreak, the lake that folds us in after a day of mundane work. Our friendship is defined by mountains, oceans, meadows, trees, and even a desert.

"Don't you just feel like a robot sometimes?" "This leaf looks like a jellyfish." "This is the perfect place for a dragon." These are real things we've said to each other! I tried to weave them through a visual journey with recurring characters. The story takes place in early fall, when nights are cozy but the water is still warm(ish!)
